Why am I not getting matches on Hinge?
By the bestsideofyou teamLast updated
If you're sending likes on Hinge and they rarely turn into matches, look at two things: what people see when they open your profile after your like, and what you said when you liked them. A bare like on a photo gives someone very little to respond to. A specific comment, backed by a profile with real details, gives them a reason.
The checklist
Your profile (what they see after your like)
- My first photo is clear, recent and just me
- My prompts have details someone could reply to
- My profile looks finished: six photos, three prompts
- My photos and prompts sound like the same person
How you like
- I add a comment to most likes, not just a bare like
- My comments respond to something specific on their profile
- I don't send the same comment to everyone
- My comments ask something, or give them something easy to answer
Who you like
- I like people whose profiles I've actually read
- I'm liking people I'd genuinely want to meet, not only the most-liked profiles I see
- I'm not using all my likes in the first five minutes of the day
Settings and pool
- My distance and age range match what I'd really accept
- My dealbreakers are real dealbreakers
- I've been active for a couple of weeks, not one evening
Your profile is your reply
When you like someone, they open your profile to decide. That's why the basics from why you're not getting likes apply here too: a clear first photo, recent pictures, prompts with details. Your prompts are also where they look for something to say back, so give them one. An answer to “Two truths and a lie” is built for this; so is a specific “I'm in my element when”.
What to say when you like someone
Pick one thing on their profile and respond to it. Not their face. Something they wrote or did.
Say their answer to “The way to win me over is” is about a pizza dough that takes three days to rise.
- Weak: “Hey, how's your week?” It could go to anyone, so it gives them nothing to answer.
- Better: “Three days? What happens on day two that I'm missing?” It shows you read it and gives them an easy, fun reply.
Good comments are short, specific and easy to answer. If they wrote about what they “I go crazy for”, ask about that. If you share the interest, say exactly how.
Who you like
Liking everyone you see feels efficient, but it tends to produce matches you don't want and comments you can't make specific. Read the profile first. Like people where you can think of one real thing to say.
What to change first
- 1Add a specific comment to every like: one line that responds to a prompt or photo and is easy to answer.
- 2Fix your first photo and your weakest prompt, because your profile is what they look at before deciding to match.
- 3Like fewer people, more deliberately. Read the profile first.
Your prompts can do a lot of this work for you. If yours feel thin, the prompt checker will show what's generic, and the full prompt list has examples for each one.
Questions people ask
What's the difference between a like and a match on Hinge?
You send a like to someone. It becomes a match when they like you back, and then you can message each other.
Should I comment on every like?
Comments aren't required, but a specific one gives the other person a reason to reply. A bare like asks them to do all the work.
Do Roses help me match?
A Rose is a way of showing extra interest. It doesn't change what your profile says, so it won't fix a weak first photo or generic prompts.
