How does the Hinge algorithm work?
By the bestsideofyou teamLast updated
Hinge hasn't published how its algorithm works in detail, so nobody outside the company can tell you exactly. What Hinge has said is that it learns from how people use the app, such as who you like and who likes you back, to suggest people you're more likely to match with. Everything beyond that, including talk of hidden scores, is guesswork. The good news is that the parts you control matter more than any trick.
What Hinge has said
Hinge describes itself as an app designed to get people off the app and on dates. It suggests profiles based on your preferences and your activity, and it runs features that pick out specific profiles for you:
- Most Compatible is a daily suggestion of someone Hinge thinks you're likely to get along with.
- Standouts is a separate list of profiles that you can respond to with a Rose.
- Your preferences (age, distance, dealbreakers) decide who can appear for you at all.
What's only rumor
You'll read confident claims about hidden scores, the best time of day to post, or resets that fix everything. Hinge hasn't confirmed them, and we don't repeat them as fact.
What you can control
Who you like. If Hinge learns from your activity, liking people you'd actually date tells it more than liking everyone.
Your photos. A clear first photo and six photos that show different parts of your life. The photo guide covers this.
Your answers. Specific answers give people something to like. Compare two answers to “I geek out on”:
Science stuff.
Volcanoes. I've been to four and I keep a rock from each one on my desk.
Saying what you want. “I'm looking for” and “We'll get along if” help the right people recognize themselves. “Together, we could” gives them a plan to say yes to.
Check your answers in the prompt checker before you change anything else.
Questions people ask
Does Hinge have an Elo score?
Hinge hasn't said it uses one, and we can't see inside the app. Treat any specific score you read about online as a guess.
Does deleting and remaking my account reset the algorithm?
Hinge hasn't published anything that says it does, and you lose your matches. We'd improve the profile you have first.
Do paid plans change what the algorithm shows?
Paid plans add features, like seeing who liked you or more ways to filter. Hinge hasn't published how they affect who sees your profile.
Does being active help?
Hinge hasn't published how activity affects ranking. Using the app regularly is a sensible habit either way.
